1 Boiling
BOILING (Wool), or ROLL BOILINGA process in the finishing of certain heavy wool fabrics, such as doeskins, beavers, pilots, etc., and is done to produce a bright, glossy finish with a soft handle. This process is used in obtaining a " permanent finish." This system is being replaced by the modern forms of " crabbing " with forced pumping. The fabric is wound on a roll or beam under tension to keep it free from creases, then placed in cold water and brought to the boil, which continues for four or five hours. Perforated metal beams are preferred, because there is a risk of staining when wood is used. This boiling fixes the fibres more firmly than any other method. -
